The Story

A pub the way a pub should feel.

Tucked into Fairmount on the corner of 25th and Aspen, The Black Taxi was built on a simple idea: a proper Irish pub doesn't need to be loud to be alive. Dark wood, brass, a Guinness poured the right way — two parts, given the time it needs — and a kitchen that knows the difference between fast food and food made fast.

Locals come for the regulars-only quiet of a Tuesday afternoon and the trad sessions that fill the back room on Thursdays. But come match day, the place transforms. The Premier League, the Champions League, international fixtures — the screens go live, the pints flow, and the room finds its voice. If you want the best Guinness in Philadelphia with the atmosphere to match, this is where you come.

We're open seven days, late, with the kitchen running til close most nights. Bring a friend, bring the dog to the patio, bring an appetite. And if there's football on, bring your voice.

The Henry James outdoor patio with shaded tables, a wooden bar, and string lights on a sunny day

Looking to book a party?

Private events happen at The Henry James.

The Taxi is a small Fairmount pub — snug by design, and not built for buyouts. Our sister saloon, The Henry James in Roxborough, has the room for it: birthdays, rehearsals, corporate nights, wakes, post-wedding pints. Same ownership, same hospitality, a great deal more space.
